A wrist fracture is one of the most common orthopedic injuries and occurs when one of the wrist bones breaks. This type of fracture can affect one or more bones, but the most frequently involved is the distal radius—the bone connecting the wrist to the forearm. Wrist fractures can range from simple, non-displaced fractures to more complex displaced fractures that may require surgical treatment.
Symptoms:
Common symptoms include immediate, intense pain following the injury, swelling, tenderness, and an inability to move the wrist or hand. In some cases, a visible deformity may be present. Other signs may include bruising and finger numbness due to compression of nearby nerves.
Causes:
Wrist fractures most commonly result from falls on an outstretched hand, sports injuries, car accidents, or direct trauma. Older adults are particularly at risk due to decreased bone density (osteoporosis). Young athletes and people engaged in high-impact activities are also at risk.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis involves a physical examination and imaging techniques such as X-rays, which help assess the severity of the fracture and guide treatment. In some cases, additional tests such as MRI or CT scans may be needed to evaluate damage to surrounding soft tissues.
Treatments:
Treatment depends on the severity and type of fracture. For non-displaced fractures where the bones remain aligned, immobilization with a cast or brace for 4–6 weeks may be sufficient, followed by physical therapy to restore mobility and strength.
For displaced or unstable fractures, surgery may be required to realign and stabilize the broken bones. This can be done using plates and screws, external fixators, or Kirschner wires, depending on the fracture. After surgery, the wrist is immobilized, and a rehabilitation program is followed to recover full function.
